Gestational Diabetes Nutrition in Jordan: A Clinical Dietitian's Guide

February 5, 2026 · 8 min read · by Rula Abu Ghazaleh

Gestational diabetes (GDM) diagnosis is stressful, but nutrition therapy alone controls it for the majority of women — no medication needed.

Carb distribution matters more than restriction. Typical plan: 3 small meals + 2–3 snacks, 30–45g carbs per meal, 15–30g per snack. Never skip meals.

Pair carbs with protein and fat. A plain fruit spikes glucose; fruit + Greek yogurt + nuts doesn't. This one principle solves most post-meal spikes.

Breakfast is the trickiest meal. Insulin resistance peaks in the morning. Cereal, juice, and white bread are the biggest offenders. Eggs, labneh, and a small portion of whole-grain bread work.

Monitor and adjust. Home glucose monitoring 4x/day guides plan refinement. Post-meal walks (10–15 min) are one of the strongest non-food levers.

Weight gain targets are lower than a typical pregnancy. Your OB and dietitian should coordinate on a specific range.
